Chosun University, one of the power house higher academic institutions in Gwangju and South Korea, has its history rooted deep with the people of Gwangju. It started as a result of people coming together with the purpose of building a university. In the year 1946 it was an evening academy and in 1953 it acquired the state of a university and a graduate school too was established. The school offers 76 majors at undergraduate level. There are 15 faculties, around 800 full-time faculty and 10 graduate schools. Not only for being an academic giant, but also for the many more outstanding facilities and meaningful events, Chosun has its name well established amongst the Korean people. There is much more to explore in the school and around as pointed out below:
Infrastructure
The school has outstanding infrastructure with most of its buildings built to standard and with the purpose in mind to accommodate studies and other activities. Some buildings date back to the starting years of the school and their strong and beautiful structures are well maintained to date. The school’s lengthy administration building holds record for being one of the longest buildings in the Guinness book of records some years back.
Transport services
The school is well linked to the rest of the city with the several bus routes starting from near the famous Haeorum Hall. Due to the vastness of the school, there are several school buses to take students and faculty around with ease. There is also ample parking space making use of personal vehicles too a viable option.
Service to the community
The greatness of the school doesn’t stop at it being an academic institution as there are many more facilities to serve the community and citizens at large. The Chosun University Hospital and Dental Hospital are prided for their wonderful services all over. There is also a gymnasium at the school of Physical Education open to the public. The hill completing the administration building’s scenic view is also open to every hiking lover.
Po kim and Sylvia Wald Museum of Art
This is a museum situated in the administration building that serves to display especially art pieces from the collection of Po Kim and Sylvia Wald, his wife. The unique art displays keep changing over time..
Chang, Hwang Nam Info & Comm Museum
Situated just in front of the Student Council Building, this is a museum to tell the history of the modern communication devices that are now very important to our daily lives. There are old phones, TVs, computers, satellite receivers etc. dating to the first productions. There are also explanations of the scientists and experiments that led to such developments.
Chosun University of Museum
Right next to the Info and Comm Museum is the Seoseok Hall which houses the University Museum on its second floor. The museum provides a true historical look at mankind’s development as it displays tools mainly associated with the early man. Not only for history lovers, but for everyone too, there is a lot to see and experience zones too to take part in some of the museum’s programs.
The Rose Garden
Easily accessible from the university’s main gate, this is a favorite spot for people of all ages. The beautiful roses are really a sight to behold when they bloom. One can also visit during other times to enjoy the ambience of the garden. There is a convenience store and café strategically placed to serve as good resting and viewing areas as well.
There is more to enjoy in this institution of higher learning. Being one of the oldest private universities in the country it surely holds a lot of history relevant to the Gwangju people. It sure is worth paying the school a visit and finding out more hidden secrets within it.
